Lunu Miris (ලුණු මිරිස්)
Popularly known as Lunu Miris in Sri Lanka, this Dried Red Chillie sambol is a spicy accompaniment that many locals devour with Milk Rice, Hopeprs, Roti and even Oven Baked Bread. Traditionally prepared using a mortal and pestle, this sambol Offers a combination of the fiery flavour of Spice, tanginess and salt that goes great with main meals.
The ingredients being quite simple to find, the Lunu Miris (loosely translated to Salt and Chillie) recipe may slightly differ according to the region. But the main ingredients always remain, dried red chillie pieces and powder, onions, salt and lime. Maldives Fish is always an option.
Ingredients
- 1 large red onion , finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons Chili Powder
- 1 tablespoon crushed mild red Pepper/ Chillie pieces
- 1 tablespoon Umbalakada (smoked and dried Maldives fish)
- 2 teaspoons lime juice
- Salt to taste
Method
- Pound the ingredients well so that all are finely crushed and combined into a thick paste.
- Add salt to taste.
- Finally, add the lime juice and mix well with the pestle.
- Serve with a meal of your choice.
