Traditional Sri Lankan Raksha Masks painted over Coconut Shells (Pack of 4)

Lakpura is known for its innovative creations and premium quality products throughout the world. Introducing a first in Sri Lanka, where tradition meets innovation, we now offer you a collection of Raksha masks that come in the form of polished and handpainted coconut shell halves. Mask making is a craft that has been perfected over the years among many generations of craftsmen, while they have been able to provide new and improved designs when compared to ancient times. Going along with environmentally friendly products, our artisans take their time and effort to clean and polish coconut shell halves and hand-paint them in intricate designs and vibrant colours.

A Raksha mask is actually a part of a costume that Sri Lankans use in many cultural dances and festivals. Raksha means "Demon," and they are mainly connected to the Kolam Ritual, which is performed here in Sri Lanka. In the earlier times, these Raksha masks assumed 24 different forms, while now it has been minimized to a very few. We currently offer you 4 forms, which are handcrafted and hand-painted by our experienced craftsmen. All demon masks consist of protruding tongues and highlighted eyes.

Mayura Raksha Mask

This represents three beautifully feathered peacocks on the side, and it is believed to bring peace, wealth, and harmony according to Sri Lankan cultural know-how.

Maru Raksha Mask

This mask is the Demon of Death and is one of the few that is used today to ward off evil. It is believed that death could be delayed by invoking blessings on the Maru Raksha through a special dance ritual.

Naga Raksha Mask

This is a cobra mask and is quite prominent when it comes to Sri Lankan masks. It portrays a demon who could transform into a King Cobra.

Ginidal Raksha Mask

Known as the fire devil mask, it represents anger, while the main colours of the mask are red, yellow, and orange.

  • We offer you the option of purchasing all four masks as a gift box, which is a great gifting idea for Sri Lankans around the world who love and respect their culture. You can use it for home wall decor, for a reading corner or a porch, or even use it for Halloween to give the holiday a Sri Lankan vibe.

Note: The masks come with a metal hook and have been hand-painted over coconut shell halves that have been properly cleaned and polished.
